Ostia, still

During a visit to the archeological site of Ostia Antica near Rome, Italy, I was struck by the feeling of stepping into another world in which time is suspended and by the anachronistic juxtaposition of ancient monument and modern signposting and preservation measures. It felt like the whole site was holding its breath waiting for time to pass. The modern additions like nets and signs marking restricted areas seem to be permanent additions to the centuries old ruins (which they probably are), leaving only nature to mark the passage of time. Through the images in this project I wanted to portray, and convey, the impression of quiet desolation, the sense of suspended time and the feeling of unintelligibility I had.
